Anyway, here's the scene!
I could tell the case was getting to her like a crow gets at peanuts. Sure, she'd made strides that day, but the weary set to her shoulders and the exhausted lines etched discordantly on the smooth skin of her face were a dead giveaway: the gains had been hard-earned. Her tie hung loose and a few buttons on her shirt had been popped open. Even still, this bird – PI Cherry Sapphire -- was a knockout and my eyes stayed glued to her as she gestured to the chair with a flick of her wrist. It was fluid and deliberate, like the switch of a panther's tail.
Moving forward, I asked, “I hear you tracked down that weasel who'd been flapping his gums, get anything juicy?”
“Give me two fingers and I'll tell you about it,” she said, her voice a husky rasp that sent shivers down my spine.
I froze like a boozed up deer in headlights.
She pointed to the bottle of scotch on her desk, a knowing smirk slinking onto her lips. “A drink, tiger. Pour me a drink and get yourself one too if you like.”
As I made my way to the bottle, she unbuttoned another few buttons on her silky blouse, giving an intriguing peek of what lay beneath.
She caught me watching and a predatory glint snuck into her eye.
“You aren't like most dames, are you, PI Sapphire?” I asked, my voice rougher than I would have liked. I pulled the top off the bottle and poured a bit more than two fingers into the first glass.
“Please, call me Cherry,” she said coming over to lean against the edge of her desk, so close that the stale, dusty air of the cluttered office became tinged with the sweet, warm smell wafting off of her body.
I wanted to stop and admire her, but I remembered the manners my old mad had belted into me and I poured the other glass instead.
“And most dames,” she continued, “most detectives, wouldn't be able to solve this mystery, but I've uncovered some things you're going to want to hear.”
